The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has partnered with the Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC) to invest in expanding internet infrastructure in geographically-isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
In a news release, the DICT said a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with MIC towards a shared commitment to promote inclusive and sustainable national development through investments in digital infrastructure and services.
“Both agencies pledge to work together in addressing the country’s digital infrastructure and capability gaps,” it said.
As part of the MOU, the MIC aims to invest in critical digital infrastructure projects that generate long-term returns and also drive inclusive growth across GIDAs.
The partnership is expected to boost investor confidence and attract local and foreign investments in underserved areas.
“By enhancing digital capabilities in remote and rural localities, the initiative will create a foundation for new economic activities, innovation hubs, and service industries, which will ultimately contribute to balanced regional development and reduced socio-economic disparities,” it said.
During the signing of the MOU in Taguig City on Tuesday, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda vowed to fulfill the promise of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to provide affordable internet in the farthest reaches of the country.
“If we work together, our window for execution is very short, but the impact we will create for this country will be generational,” Aguda said.
On the other hand, MIC president and chief executive officer Rafael Consing Jr. said the MOU is a step towards building the digital backbone of the Philippines that delivers “long-term, intergenerational impact.”
“By prioritizing digital infrastructure today, we are not only enabling inclusive growth and innovation, but also securing opportunities for future generations of Filipinos,” Consing said.
