BATAC CITY – The construction of a modern sports facility in this city in Ilocos Norte is underway to promote healthy lifestyle and community engagement.

Outgoing Mayor Albert Chua confirmed this on Thursday, saying the modern sports center is now 80 percent complete.

“The sports center is expected to be completed within the year,” Chua said in a media interview, adding that the facility, whose features were not detailed, will be a big boost to the city’s local economy once it opens as it would cater to big sports and cultural activities.

Once built, the sports center, located in Barangay Naguirangan, is expected to become a vital component in the city’s infrastructure development, as well as help contribute to the province’s sports development program.

“This is a much-needed facility to boost our sports program and for the development of the Batac community,” Arlene Del Rosario, a city resident, said.

A PHP200-million fund has been allotted for the sports facility under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and through the collaborative efforts of Speaker Martin Romualdez and the Department of Public Works and Highways, according to the city government.

From May 24 to June 2, the country’s finest young athletes will gather in Ilocos Norte as host to this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

The sports venues and billeting schools have all been prepared for the 18 regions and two special delegations to the sports activity.
