BUSAN, South Korea – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippine government is determined to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations “as much as we can, as soon as we can,” warning that hesitation could leave the country behind in the global race toward digital transformation.

“You’re missing a chance if you wait. AI is going to come -- parang alon ‘yan. Kahit anong gawin mo, mababasa ka (like a wave, whatever you do, you’ll still get hit),” Marcos told reporters after the conclusion of the 2025 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

“And if you don’t learn how to swim, ma-iiwanan ka talaga (you will be left behind),” he added.

Marcos said AI was one of the most discussed topics during APEC sessions and bilateral meetings, with leaders acknowledging both its promise and potential risks.

“What AI can do one month ago is different from what AI will be able to do one month from now,” he noted.

“It’s such a powerful tool, and you must take advantage of it as quickly as possible.”

The President said the government is now studying how to adopt AI effectively across departments, with the help of global experts and local think tanks to ensure safe and beneficial use.

He emphasized that AI adoption must also consider its policy implications, including ethics, data protection and public trust.

This year’s APEC Summit placed heavy focus on AI-driven growth and innovation, culminating in the Gyeongju Declaration endorsing the APEC AI Initiative, a regional framework to build AI capacity and promote safe, inclusive and human-centered digital innovation.
