MGEN Renewable Energy, Inc. (MGreen) has energized its 52.8-megawatt (MWac) MGreen Cordon Solar power facility in Cordon, Isabela, providing clean energy to more than 53,000 households.

MGreen, the renewable energy unit of Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), said in a statement Wednesday that the Cordon Solar power project is its largest solar plant in the Cagayan Valley region under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) second Green Energy Auction (GEA II).

The MGreen Cordon Solar is also MGEN’s seventh solar power facility in the country in addition to MGreen BulacanSol, Nueva Solar, MGreen Baras Solar, MGreen Bongabon Solar, MGreen SP Calatagan, and MGreen SP Tarlac.

MGreen Cordon Solar is expected to displace over 50,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is equivalent to over 11,700 gasoline-powered cars off the road annually using the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator,” MGREEN said.

The project also aligns with the government’s goal to increase the share of renewable energy in the power mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

MGreen has 85.2 MWac solar capacity in the pipeline this year, including its recently inaugurated plant in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija and the upcoming expansion of MGreen Baras Solar.

Aside from its contribution to boosting the country’s RE sector, the MGreen Cordon Solar project also generated 800 local jobs during its construction.
