The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is looking to partner with the Philippine Airlines (PAL) to reduce the cost of airfare to Siargao, one of the country’s tourism hotspots and an internationally popular surfing spot.
In a statement on Thursday, DOTr acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez said decreasing the airfare to Siargao is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to encourage more local and international tourists to the tourist spot.
Lopez said an agreement with PAL seeks to reduce the one-way fare to Siargao from P17,500 to P11,000.
“Para po sa Siargao, meron na pong kasunduan with PAL – na (For Siargao, there is already an agreement with PAL that) hopefully, we can implement it in the coming days na mapababa (to reduce) from P17,500 to P11,000,” he said.
In addition, he said, the dialogue with PAL would continue to further decrease the airfare to Siargao.
To date, the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines are also looking to extend the runway of Siargao Airport to accommodate larger airplanes and serve more passengers.
