SOME 295,000 metric tons of non-basmati white rice will be exported by the government of India to the Philippines. According to reports the allocation of rice exports by India is the highest among the seven countries they are allowed to export to. Aside from the Philippines, India exports rice to Cameroon, Malaysia, Guinea, Cote d' Ivoire, Nepal, and Seychelles. After the Philippines, Cameroon had the second highest allotment at 190,000 metric tons. The third spot goes to Malaysia with 170,000 metric tons. India is one of the world's biggest rice exporters. But they recently banned some overseas sales of the grain to pull down local prices. According to Agriculture Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban then said they are going to work with the Indian government that will allow the imports on humanitarian grounds. Earlier President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had removed the price ceiling that the Palace imposed on regular and well-milled varieties of rice amid the soaring prices of the staple grain. Inflation in the Philippines grew to 6.1 percent in September, with rice inflation growing by 17.9 percent.
