BUTUAN CITY – The provincial government of Dinagat Islands formalized a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) on Tuesday, paving the way for the establishment of renewable energy projects within the province.
“These projects will encompass the development of both solar and wind renewable energy sources,” Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. said in a statement on Wednesday.
Demerey said the primary beneficiaries of these energy projects will be hospitals and government buildings across Dinagat Islands, ensuring a more stable and potentially cost-effective power supply for critical public services.
Looking back, Demerey highlighted the increasing electricity expenses incurred by the province's hospitals, noting that the provincial government spent approximately P3.28 million on electricity in 2023, which further increased to P4.45 million in 2024.
“Our aim is not only to address these rising energy costs but also to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of our health and other essential social services for the people of Dinagat Islands,” Demerey added.
He also pointed out the significant demand for power and energy within the province, driven by its expanding economic activities and ongoing developments. Currently, the Dinagat Islands Electric Cooperative generates around 5.8 to 7.8 megawatts of electricity, primarily sourced from three diesel power plants and two power barges.
