The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding to boost research and academic programs.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will advance social entrepreneurship and service-learning innovations and activities; and collaborate on research projects, resource mobilization, and sharing of academic information and materials for five years.

“This notable partnership, a conscious effort to promote a culture of sustainability in the country, will have a far-reaching impact not only on our respective institutions but on the broader academic and national communities we serve,” UP president Angelo Jimenez said in a news release.

Unlike traditional businesses, UP said social entrepreneurship is an innovative approach covering “economic, social, and environmental” development which impacts the wellbeing of communities.

Service learning, on the other hand, incorporates academic learning with community service where students can perform learning on “real-world-based issues.”

“Service learning offers an opportunity for our students to see the social relevance of their disciplines, actively engage with their communities, enhance their interpersonal skills, and provide space for personal growth. It is a pedagogy that connects theory with practice,” UP vice president for academic affairs Leo Cubillan said.
