Construction of the P2.37-billiion, 62-megawatt peak solar power plant in Ajuy, Iloilo started Friday, eventually boosting power capacity in Panay Island while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The Ajuy-1 Solar Power Project, located in Tipacla, Ajuy, and covers a 47.86-hectare area, is the province’s first major ground-mounted solar facility, being developed by Jin Navitas Solaris, the Department of Energy (DOE) said in a press release.

It will be connected to the Panay Island grid through the Sara–Panit 69 kV transmission line and has already completed the required System Impact Study. It is seen to enhance grid stability in northern Iloilo.

It is part of DOE’s Green Energy Auction Program 2 (GEA-2) and is entitled to a green energy tariff of P4.35 per kilowatt-hour.

It will contribute to the move to increase the share of renewable energy to the country’s total energy mix to around 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

“This groundbreaking initiative not only marks a significant step in reducing our carbon footprint but also empowers local communities by providing them with reliable and renewable energy resources,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said.

“The Ajuy Solar Power Plant is a testament to our collective commitment to a sustainable energy future.”
